Charge in their currency, settle in yours

Fatou Diallo·PaymentsMay 29, 2026 5 min read

A customer who sees a price in a currency they do not recognise hesitates, and hesitation is the most expensive thing at checkout. Letting people pay in XAF, NGN, USD, or EUR is a conversion lever before it is a finance decision.

Two separate questions

Presentation currency is what the customer sees and approves. Settlement currency is what lands in the account you hold. They do not have to match, and pretending they must is where a lot of complexity comes from.

  • Show the price in the currency your customer expects.
  • Settle into the account and currency that fits your treasury.
  • Let the rail and the FX layer reconcile the gap, transparently.

Kept separate, each question has a clean answer. Collapsed into one, they become the reason a launch slips a quarter.
